Carpet selection guide: Terms you should know

There’s a good reason why carpeting remains the number one choice among homeowners.  This floor covering adds warmth, charm, and elegance to a home and comes with many functional benefits.

As a homeowner, you'll understandably want the best quality at a reasonable price and one that looks great and performs well for a long time. While you certainly don't need to be an expert, you should familiarize yourself with some terms to ensure you get the right one for your needs.

Fiber: The most crucial decision you'll make

Fiber is the foundation of a rug, the material from which the yarns are made. There are natural and synthetic fibers, and both can be great choices; what you choose is only a matter of personal preference.

Wool, natural, and synthetics are the five most common, including nylon, polyester, olefin, and Triexta. Get to know the pros and cons of each.

Pile: Referring to how the threads are attached to the backing

All rugs start as a looped pile, such as Level Loop or Berber. The primary cut pile has short, even fibers, but you'll also see rugs of various lengths.

At our carpet store, you’ll see a variety of styles. These include looped constructions like Berber and level Loop, various cut piles like Shag and Saxony, or cut and loops where the different fiber heights create patterns such as pin dot or geometrics.

Density determines quality

This is how closely the fibers are tufted together. The label’s density number should read 3,000 to 5,000.  You can also check it yourself; bend back a sample card and if you see a lot of white space, ask why.

Twist for longer yarns

This refers to how many times a thread turns around per one inch. Look for a twist number of four, five, or even higher on the label. The higher the twist number, the more durable the carpet.
